BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare blood lactate elimination between individuals with paraplegia (P) and able-bodied (AB) individuals after strenuous arm exercise. METHODS: Eight P and 8 AB men (matched for age, height, and weight) participated in this study. Average weekly arm-training volume for P participants (eg, a href=http://www.easymedonline.com/Mobility-Scooters-s/20.htmpower wheelchairs/a, a href=http://www.easymedonline.com/Power-Chairs-s/31.htmmedicare power wheelchairs/a basketball) and AB participants (eg, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing) was 4.1 +/- 1.6 vs 2.8 +/- 0.8 h. A maximal-arm-cranking intensity-graded exercise test to volitional exhaustion was performed by all test participants. Immediately after the exercise test, the participants performed arm cranking for another 30 minutes at a workload of one third of the maximally achieved power output. During this active recovery, mixed-capillary blood samples were taken for lactate analysis. RESULTS: The lactate accumulation constant was significantly higher for P individuals, whereas the lactate elimination constant showed no significant difference between the two groups. The Hephaestus Smart Wheelchair System
The Hephaestus Smart Wheelchair System is envisioned as a series of components that clinicians and wheelchair manufacturers will be able to attach to standard power wheelchairs to convert them into “smart wheelchairs.” A prototype of the system has been developed and mounted on an Everest and Jennings Lancer2000 wheelchair. The prototype bases its navigation assistance behavior on the behavior developed for the NavChair Assistive Wheelchair Navigation System, but the underlying hardware and software are being designed to facilitate commercialization. This paper describes our design goals for the Hephaestus system and discusses the current status of the system prototype as well as plans for future work for power wheelchairs.

Study of the Independence IBOT 3000 Mobility System: an innovative power mobility device, during use in community environments
OBJECTIVE: To test the safe and effective use of a new mobility device, the Independence IBOT 3000 Mobility System, power wheelchairs and power wheelchairs, by people with a disability. DESIGN: A prospective, balanced, open-label evaluation that used participants as their own controls. SETTING: Home and community environments. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty subjects who use a mobility device. INTERVENTIONS: Subjects used the test device for up to 2 weeks in their home and community environments. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Safety was determined by comparing the number of reported adverse events, including falls, in the test device compared with their own device. Effectiveness was measured by comparing scores from the Community Drive Test in the test device versus their own chair. RESULTS: No adverse event requiring medical attention was reported for either device and a similar number of device falls were reported for each device. The scored driving test results found that the test device was shown to statistically improve (P <.001) the subjects independent functional mobility skills in a community environment. Ten of 20 subjects were able climb stairs independently; the remaining 10 subjects were able to climb stairs with the assistance of only 1 person. CONCLUSIONS: People who are properly assessed, and participate and successfully complete the training, will benefit through increased independence in community mobility activities.

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of four power wheelchairs and power wheelchairs when used by children to perform a variety of indoor activities. Eight boys and eight girls performed a series of 11 functional tasks when positioned in each of four different power wheelchairs reflecting different design classes. There were no significant differences for many of the dependent variables.
